Diesel-fuel operated Snow-Melters

The construction of snow-melters makes it possible:

  • To improve the intensity and safety of traffic flows on urban streets in autumn and winter periods due to timely snow removal and utilization;
  • To reduce considerably the volume of snow mass stored on lawns, grassplots and on other territories
  • To reduce considerably the amount of pollutants accumulated in snow mass and entering water-bodies with melt-water  

All facilities are fully automated thus making it possible to provide their reliable operation even in case of reduced number of attending workers.

 


«Dry» Snow Dumping Sites

Snow dumping on specially equipped snow dumping sites with subsequent snow melting in spring and summer period is the cheapest method for snow mass utilization. Nevertheless, lack of free areas in large cities and the necessity to provide snow dumping sites with a water-tight covering prevent any wide application of “dry” snow dumping sites.

The evaluation of the quality of melt water produced on “dry” snow dumping sites revealed that this melt water may be discharged into wastewater disposal networks only after preliminary treatment. The treatment level is determined by the conditions of water reception into surface run-off or wastewater disposal systems.

 

 

The cost of building and assembling operations is within the range of 10 - 15 thousand rubles per 1m3

The cost of project and detailed design documentation is calculated as a percentage of the total construction cost depending on the complexity category of the facilities to be designed; approximately it amounts to some 3 – 9 per cent.

The prices for design and survey operations are determined in accordance with the Reference-Book of Design Work Base Prices СБЦП 81-02-03-2001, except the construction of facilities carried out through the employment of the budgetary financial means of the city of Moscow (for these facilities specially developed Price Reference Books МРР are applicable).

 


Snow-Melters using the heat of sanitary sewers and drainage mains

Any potential possibility to arrange a snow-melter using the heat of sanitary sewers is determined based on the condition that the available capacity of the existing municipal wastewater treatment facilities is definitely sufficient to receive melt water from this snow-melter. The optimum daily capacity of a snow-melter is within the range of 5 – 10 thousand m3 of snow.

Depending on the hydraulic resources of a wastewater disposal and treatment system and the availability of territories suitable for the arrangement of snow-melters, the construction of the following three types of these melters is possible::

  • non-buried (subsurface) facilities; wastewater is supplied under pressure from a gravity-flow sewer using a special pumping station
  • non-buried (subsurface) facilities; wastewater is supplied from wastewater pressure pipeline; water is discharged into a gravity-flow sewer
  • moderately buried facilities located on the by-pass line of a gravity-flow sewer

Snow-Melters based on heat-supply networks

There are also snow-melting capacities based on the application of the energy of municipal heat-supply networks. Every million m3 of annual snow-melting capacity require the heat energy of about 15 Gcal per hour. 

This heat amount is sufficient for the heating of 200 000 m2 of dwelling space that is why a municipal heat-supply network may be used for snow-melting purposes only if this network has free capacities.

Snow-Melters using the heat of the wastewater produced by thermal power stations

The arrangement of snow-melters using the heat of wastewater produced by thermal power stations is similar to the arrangement of snow-melters using the heat of sewers but it has the following features:/p>

  • Water after snow-melters is discharged directly into a drain network or water bodies, that is why its treatment level is to be higher and meet the established requirements
  • For different thermal power stations the temperature of their wastewater may vary considerably, sometimes being low (below 10°C)
  • Wastewater produced by thermal power stations and used for snow-melting is clean enough, in some cases it may be used for the dilution of melt-snow pollutants in order to reduce their concentration to an acceptable level

Diesel-fuel operated Snow-Melters

The advantages of proposed snow-melters include the following: independence (availability of large engineering lines is not obligatory) and small size of occupied territory. Its arrangement is efficient in locations where heat sources (large sewers or wastewater produced by thermal power stations) are not available. 

Operation on the basis of a mobile boiler plant

This snow-melter provides snow utilization as a result of its contact with hot water heated in a heat-exchanger. To heat the water used for the operation of this snow-melter, saturated vapor is supplied to the heat-exchanger. This vapor is generated by a three-module Diesel-oil boiling plant ПКУ-1.6/4 (the maximum thermal capacity of each module amounts to 1050 kW).

Operation on the basis of submersible burners

The operational experience proves the possibility to use liquefied gas instead of Diesel fuel. This variant is expedient if a snow-melting facility is located on the territory of an automobile operating company that uses liquefied gas as automobile fuel.
